Why you should get on the trails during the Covid-19 Pandemic (if allowed)

  1. Training with an N95 mask can be great oxygen deprivation training (altitude substitute) if you are otherwise healthy.
  2. Although the Virus does not die immediately in sunlight, Vitamin D levels increase from being in the sun which is great for our mental health which can also improve our immune systems as can any form of nature or ecotherapy such as Shinrin Yoku (forest bathing).
  3. Trails are better than paths or sidewalks on your joints and help spread people out vs. urban, dense parks and paths. It’s also a little more adventurous and might make for some good social media posts. ;-)

Tips for how to enjoy the trails responsibly and get a great workout:

  1. Spread out and try trails you have not been on before, further from the busier, frequently used trails near population density. This may take a little planning and extra time but it can be well worth it in the end and invigorating vs. the same old routine.
  2. Go early in the day if possible, especially with it warming up around the US now. This is not only a glorious way to start the day and beat the heat, it helps ensure less traffic and you get your workout in despite having 3 last minute Zoom calls added to your schedule.
  3. Pick a hill and go! - Try a hill or a steep spot that is too tough for most casual hikers/walkers to tackle. You will be faster on your next run or ride if you really work at this. 10X 100M uphill as fast as you can handle, with just a minute of rest between each will do the trick.

Well this time I decided to do something that nobody had ever attempted before (as far as I could find) which was to summit the 10 most prominent peaks in the state of Utah in 10 days or less (with the goal of raising $10,000 for St. Jude Children's Hospital, hence the title).
